From Bland to Gothic: A Room Makeover with Wallpaper Installation

Wallpaper has been a popular decorating element for centuries. It has the power to transform a space from bland to bold, from ordinary to extraordinary.
Step 1: Selecting the Perfect Wallpaper
The first step in any successful gothic wallpaper installation is selecting the perfect wallpaper. There are many factors to consider when choosing wallpaper, including color, pattern, and texture. In this room makeover, we wanted to transform a bland, white room into a gothic, moody retreat.
When chose a wallpaper with a dark, moody floral pattern. The black background created a dramatic backdrop for the bold, red flowers. The wallpaper also had a subtle texture that added depth and dimension to the room.
When selecting wallpaper, it's important to consider the scale of the pattern. In our room makeover, we chose a large-scale pattern that would make a statement in the room. If you have a small room or want a more subtle look, a smaller-scale pattern may be more appropriate.
Step 2: Preparing the Walls
Once you've selected the perfect wallpaper, it's time to prepare the walls. Proper preparation is key to a successful wallpaper installation. If the walls are not properly prepared, the wallpaper may not adhere properly or may bubble and wrinkle over time.
The first step in preparing the walls is to clean them thoroughly. Use a mild detergent and water to remove any dirt, dust, or grease from the walls. Then, allow the walls to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Next, fill any cracks or holes in the walls with spackle. Use a putty knife to apply the spackle and smooth it out. Allow the spackle to dry completely before sanding it smooth with fine-grit sandpaper.
Finally, prime the walls with a wallpaper primer. A primer will create a smooth, even surface for the wallpaper to adhere to and will also help to prevent the wallpaper from peeling over time.
Step 3: Installing the Wallpaper
Now that the walls are prepared, it's time to install the wallpaper. Wallpaper installation can be a daunting task, but with the right tools and techniques, it can be a fun and rewarding DIY project.
Tools you will need:
- Wallpaper
- Wallpaper paste
- Wallpaper brush or roller
- Measuring tape
- Scissors or a utility knife
- Level
- Pencil
- Step stool or ladder
Smoothing tool
Measure and cut the wallpaper: Measure the height and width of each wall and cut the wallpaper to the appropriate size, leaving a few inches of excess at the top and bottom. This excess will be trimmed off after the wallpaper is installed.
Apply the wallpaper paste: Apply wallpaper paste to the back of the wallpaper using a wallpaper brush or roller. Be sure to apply the paste evenly, paying special attention to the edges of the wallpaper.
Hang the wallpaper: Starting at the top of the wall, carefully align the wallpaper with the ceiling and use a level to ensure that it is straight. Smooth the wallpaper down with a smoothing tool, working from the center of the wallpaper outwards to remove any air bubbles. Continue to align and smooth the wallpaper downwards, trimming off the excess at the bottom with scissors or a utility knife.
Repeat for remaining walls: Repeat the process for the remaining walls, being careful to match the pattern at the seams. Allow the wallpaper to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Trim excess wallpaper: Once the wallpaper is dry, use a utility knife and a straightedge to trim off the excess wallpaper at the top and bottom of the walls.
Wallpaper installation is a great way to transform a room from bland to bold. With the right wallpaper and proper preparation and installation techniques, you can create a room that is both beautiful and functional. Whether you choose a bold, dramatic pattern or a subtle, textured wallpaper, the possibilities are endless.
